Commanding the title “The King of
Catwalk Experimentation,” English
designer Gareth Pugh is carving out
his name as a fashion artistic
influencer by creating designs that
are more spectacle than wearable. A
design darling since he emerged on
the London Fashion Week scene in
2006, Pugh already has fashions

elite speaking highly of his creativity and ingenuity. Vogue
Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour, dished at his Spring 2007
Collection where he utilized balloon type inflatable
material that, “...his genius is undeniable.” A comment like
that is extremely coveted for any emerging designer and
such an endorsement furthers Pugh's credibility for his
somewhat outlandish take on fashion.
Fashionistas, who don't understand the creations of Pugh,
fail to realize that seasoned runway vets like Wintour, see
so many collections that when a designer sends
something down the runway that may look disturbing, it is
interpreted as thought provoking. Fashion like any art form
has a performance aspect and designers like Pugh are
considered fashion performers. Pugh has admitted that
he has not sold many of his designs and is working to
show more then just editorial performance pieces.
Pugh's Spring 2008 Ready-to-Wear Collection was of
course packed with jaw dropping artistic expression. The
highlight pieces of the collection were the ribbon-leather
body dresses with Michael Jackson-esque crystal
encrusted white socks along with the fringed leather
jackets both an inimitable fusion of form and tension,
which looked powerful in a heavy-metal rock-in-roll kind of
way. The white rat shoulder drape was very subway chic
and looked as if the rats were crawling up the models
body. In the midst of all this madness was the galactic
looking Swarovski crystal mesh dress, toped with a glittery
cubic shaped headpiece that covered the model’s entire
head. Besides the shoes, I am not sure how many women
will want to be seen in this collection, unless they attend
the Rocky Horror Picture show gala. The fashion world
knows Pugh as a true performer, but can he design a
profitable commercial collection? Stay tuned!
