Comme des Garcons, French for
“like boys,” is a Japanese fashion
label designed and owned by Rei
Kawakubo. The label was started in
1969 in Tokyo, Japan and has
become an international design
house with stores in London, Paris,
New York City, Beijing, Hong Kong,
Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Fukuoka.
Over the decades the line has
established a reputation for not only
taking risks on the runway, but also
bringing a theatrical unconventional
approach to fashion design. Love it
or leave it, Kawakubo is a major
presence on the Paris Fashion Week
scene. Her Spring 2008 Ready-to-
Wear Collection shown during Paris
Fashion Week in October of last year
was a mind-altering experimentation
of color, shape and form.
When the designer discussed where
she found inspiration for her
collection, the one word she used
that stood out was “Cacophony,”
wherein I immediately thought of the
Cacophony Society. The society is, “A
randomly gathered network of
individuals united in the pursuit of
experiences beyond the pale of
mainstream society through
subversion, pranks, art, fringe
explorations and meaningless
madness,” (Cacophony.org).
Kawakubo's collection was just that
meaningless madness of cartoon
proportions. She is a risk taker and
true runway rebel, whose designs
make you think outside the box.
