These things may appear to be so basic, yet people throughout the course of history
have fought and died for these essential rights that are still not universal today.
As an American, I have the protected right under the First Amendment of the U.S.
Constitution to express my ideas and speech through almost any medium of my
choice. I have elected to express myself through fashion, my true passion. Freedom
and fashion are two words I believe to be synonymous with each other. What you pick
out each day to wear for work or play is one of the most powerful forms of nonverbal
freedom of expression. The color or lack of color you choose to wear can speak so
loudly about how you feel, words are not necessary. Many designers use fashion as a
social canvas. According to Donatella Versace, her late brother Gianni used fashion to
free himself of social constraints. She dished in an interview with Ingrid Sischy in 2000
that, “Almost immediately, when he began as a designer, he was putting out fashion
that symbolized freedom in the world of style. For men, it was about the freedom to be
colorful and to stand out, instead of fitting in with the formulae of what men are
supposed to look like. The freedom to throw away their ties, to wear screaming orange,
instead of Wall Street grey. For women, it was the freedom to project sexuality, instead
of being sexually defined by others.”
This issue, we wanted to bring you designers who don’t play by the rules. These men
and women like the late Gianni Versace are bold, daring and send a message through
their designs. Their creativity reaches boundless limits that may awe and shock the
average spectator at times. So prepare yourself for a wild ride of fashion.

Fashion Q&A
This July take the time to relish in the freedom to be you.
Personal freedom of expression comes in many forms:
The choices of music we listen to, the places we desire
to go, the food we take pleasure in eating, the company
we choose to keep, the media we like to read or watch,
the right to worship or not, and of course, choosing how
we appear to the world around us.
