Melanie Fraser Hart and William Calvert say that their label, Callula Lillibelle, is most definitely for ‘the modern woman’ but for fall/winter 2011 the label
took a fashion time machine back to the swinging 60s, punk’d 70s and 80s to bring us their unique blend of affordable, comfortable and effortless chic.
Despite only celebrating their first birthday in February, Callulua Lillibelle showcased an incredible variety of looks. Festive mini dresses, houndstooth
capes, sequinned skinnies and tailored jackets and suits. Calvert’s couturier background was apparent in the perfectly-cut red-notched collar coat which
had more than a hint of Audrey Hepburn about it. The voluminous black lace petticoat dress paired with a neat black cropped jacket provided a pleasing
contrast and would work well for any modern day Holly Golightly. Calvert did Bianca Jagger proud with his take on the slouchy 70s suit, a herringbone grey
peplum jacket and wide leg trouser accessorised with floppy hat and wrist length gloves. Such was the variety that Callula Lillibelle even offered us a
feminine interpretation of the tuxedo - a black maxi tuxedo jacket complete with lace turtleneck and carefully tailored slim trousers which served to highlight
Calvert’s extraordinary technical skill.
The brand unleashed its anarchic side with the rest of the collection. A leopard print mac and skinnies would make office life anything but dull, as would
the black slouchy trouser, stretch tulle tee and motorcycle vest combination. Thanks to Callula Lillibelle’s expansive use of color, fabric and their size 0-14
policy, the collection boasted something that would appeal to every woman. A teal velvet motorcycle jacket, ‘sequin tropical’ print mini dress and blazer and
daring green sequin skinnies gave the collection an angsty hit. Callula Lillibelle’s fall/winter 2011 collection may give a reverential nod to style icons past -
Audrey Hepburn, Bianca Jagger, Debbie Harry et al - but its high quality design, sheer variety and affordability ensure that it stays firmly in the present.
