"This season was all about grace and poetry in motion - and what epitomizes that more than a ballerina?" asked Carmen Marc Valvo backstage as he
looked over his collection before the run of show. "The mystery, sensuality - the frailty and the strength of a ballerina is what I wanted to explore. It's a
collection that's literally swirled in metallic tulles and chiffon." Well, apart from the swirling, three-dimensional wire treatments Valvo explored with this
collection- most prevalent in the show's final garment, a black one-shoulder lace gown with an organza swirl applique, and the snippets of Emily
Dickinson's poem "I cannot dance upon my toes" - the whole ballerina idea really seems lost. It's really just a way of putting into words and into
perspective what Valvo has always done. Grace and strength have been the highlighting qualities of his impressive repertoire and trust that there are a lot
more interesting facets to this collection than some hidden ballerina trope (For full-blown, gung-ho ballerina see Gilles Mendel's Spring 2011 collection).
It's impossible not to mention the varying uses of fur in this line-up. Sable knitted stoles, a black mink lined bomber jacket, a silver fox and silver swakara
(Persian lamb) coat and even a Palomino shaved mink coat. And that's just some of the fur that made a lap around Times Square's NASDAQ building. But
the very best looks were those that explored glamorous layering, somewhat, but not completely like Saturday night's stellar Joseph Altuzarra showing. A
black beaded double faced wool coat hung over a black embroidered tulle gown with a relaxed 70s/Lauren Hutton-ish easiness and confidence. It was a
devilishly luxe look.
That same easiness was reflected in the hair styling by Ted Gibson's talented team of hair experts. "It's a really casual elegance," said Eugene Smith,
senior stylist at the Ted Gibson Salon New York, backstage as he worked on the beautiful Angelika Kocheva. "What we did was pull the hair back with a
very slight twist at the knob of the head, using Ted Gibson Beautiful Hold Hair Spray ($19.95, drugstore.com) and some Ted Gibson Hair Sheets ($14.95,
drugstore.com). We finish it off with a really soft hanging curl. Nothing too overdone or stuffy." The same could be said for the clothes. As always, Valvo
delivered a sumptuous collection that perfectly balanced a sense of opulence without being overbearing.
