Hyden Yoo had the good sense to stage his fall/winter 2011 presentation at Soho House. As models sipped on drinks, smoked, played pool and cards you could be forgiven for thinking you’
d just been invited on a night out with the coolest gang in town rather than to a fashion presentation. However Yoo wasn’t just thinking of the fashion week frazzled models, photographers
and journalists when he chose such an informal venue, the setting did well to show off his designs to their best advantage. Designs that were inspired by a British 1950s take on the dandy,
the Teddy Boy, as was evidenced by the ‘Keep Calm and Carry on’ posters and Union Jack flags. The menswear looked deceptively simple but had hidden depths. Tailored trousers in
shades of khaki rolled up just a fraction and paired with elegant lace up boots and a simple shirt and blazer/jacket combination were clean but very cool. Yoo carefully balanced his
nostalgic vibe with expert tailoring and detail, a khaki mens’ jacket with a statement collar and subtle panelling reminded us of the designer’s modern day clientele.
As for Yoo’s womenswear output, it didn’t digress much from his mens’ attire. The womens’ looks had a slightly school uniform charm to them, thanks to the thick rolled up wool socks,
plain black brogues and restrained color palette. Yet Yoo’s womenswear has a leftfield elegance, a russet ribbed zip up cardigan paired with a simple shirt in a washed out grey and muted
peach colored cropped trousers showed a talent with unusual colors. While a collarless jacket with huge lapels in a similar terracotta hue and a-line black button up skirt was chic without
trying too hard. Yoo is clearly a master of layering and rolling up layers, it wasn’t just trousers that were rolled up but jackets and tee shirt sleeves too which gave the collection an effortless,
lived in appeal. It’s clear that Yoo’s clothes would be very much at home on the backs of Soho House’s members, his designs are rooted in nostalgia yet they are discreetly directional and
unpretentiously chic.
