Catty on the
Catwalk:
Fashion Week New York
Spring 09 Runway Report
Luca Luca's new Creative Director, Raul
Melgoza, premiered his new collection
with classic aplomb. The nearly all white
palette showcased stunningly tailored
gowns, cocktail dresses and light
separates.

It was a cohesive collection with
beautiful champagne silks, eggplants,
pumpkin and metallic silvers. The one
factor saving the show from a total
homerun was the bizarre and footwear.
Graduated wedge heels on blazingly
white slip-ons clashed on the bit more
than subdued when one of the models
was photographed removing the shoes
halfway down the catwalk, opting for a
bohemian "barefoot" strut.

Ports 1961 was a real eye-opener...at
times. It was a clear departure from
past collections, but the ride was well
worth it. The four elements were all
seen going down that catwalk. From
one look to the other, and sometimes
even in the same outfit, one was
taken into fire, earth, air and water.

A cardigan made of a kaleidoscopic,
oily glow of peacock feathers brought
a modern asceticism, as did a
vibrant cobalt shaman dress. Metallic
fringes and bronze platings seemed
to leave planet Earth and rocketed
you into a glamorous Oracle of
Delphi - in outer space vibe. The
Easter Island-like engravings on the
oversized and nontraditional jewelry
really brought the respective pieces
together stunningly. Unfortunately,
when the looks were more down to
earth, the sizzle was gone. In this
occasion, Ports 1961 was at its best
when it pumped up the volume.
With super chic cuts and
sexy, bold, sophisticated
colors, Gideon Oberson's
collection for
Gottex was a
presentation of fashion that
had a clear vision and
statement. With his
stunning cast of Brazilian
models, decked out in that
Rio glow, sporting gold
fingernails with Gottex's
versatile bathing suits,
appropriate for a poolside
party or an indoor meal
after a dip in the French
Riviera. The bathing suits
with built-in belts were
especially flavorful and the
ivory "suit dresses" with the
draped off-shoulder were a
knockout. To round up the
looks, some of the girls
donned on sky-high 18K
gold stilettos, while the rest
were paired with the same
shoe in black. The
collection was a definite
winner and with its great
versatility, it allowed room
for almost anyone to find
something in the show that
will suit their figure.
