Nicholas K Opens MBFW with an Unexpected Trend:
Steam-Punk Anyone?
The official first day of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week kicked off with
the Nicholas K show at the Lincoln Center Studio. It was a comforting
feeling to kick-off the ready-to-wear catwalk season with just this kind
of show - total deadpan whimsy. Nicholas K brought some
smile-inducing hybrids - think Victorian Grunge Swashbucklers.
The collection undoubtedly worked better at ground-level with its
exceptional sportswear and outerwear, but took a bit of a nose-dive
when it tried to grasp an urban opulence, in particular with its black
fur-lined jackets. It felt messy - the material just seemed to have gotten
away from siblings Nicholas and Christopher Kunz. On a general
level, it was hard to not be charmed. One fascinating conceit came in a
forest Eldra dress that played like Scarlett O'Hara donning her curtains
for fall 2011 - except the belle of the South decided to make her dress
more like a jumpsuit. It was quirky, coquettish - deliciously
tongue-in-cheek, as were those clunky espadrille boots. An
asymmetrical military green men's duffel jacket was a real eye-opener,
definitely a piece that made editors in the front row take note.
Nicholas K also continued the ongoing patchwork trend, working them
into traditional shapes, as seen on a men's blazer at the elbows, as
well as in strategically placed scraps on Killian pants and even in the
fantastic knitwear that closed the show.
We've been seeing Steam-punk on the silver screen for some time
now, but it felt almost revelatory to see that strand of sartorial
theatricality on the catwalk.
