With Paris Fashion Week swinging into action today, we can’t help but to wonder: which design houses will rise to the occasion and who will
quickly become a mere afterthought? During the fall/winter 2011 collections,
Christian Dior was the hot topic of conversation with the ousting
of
John Galliano. But controversy seems to be so last season, so let’s focus on the fashion already!

Two big fashion houses –
Balmain and Issey Miyake – will unveil their spring/summer 2012 womenswear collections designed by their
new appointees –
Olivier Rousteing for Balmain and Yoshiyuki Miyamae for Issey Miyake – both talents coincidentally were groomed and
promoted from within. All eyes will be on both houses to see if their new lead designers have what it takes to keep each respective brand on
the forefront of fashion.

Little is known about the 25-year old Rousteing, so let’s focus our attention on Miyamae, who takes the reins from
Dai Fujiwara. Miyamae, 35,
was born in Tokyo and graduated from the
Bunka Fashion College in Shinjuku, Japan in 1998. Just three years out of graduation, Miyamae
caught the attention of Issey Miyake himself and his predecessor, Fujiwara, who had asked him to be a member of the team working on the
A-POC Project. A-POC is an acronym for “A Piece of Cloth,” a reference to a manufacturing method that uses computer technology to create
clothing from a single piece of thread in a single process. Working very closely with Mr. Miyake and Fujiwara, Miyamae received a thorough
induction into the world of Issey Miyake from concepts, to the roots of clothing design, and to manufacturing. In 2006, Miyamae became part of
the
Issey Miyake Design Studio team working under Fujiwara, and within just 5 years the spotlight is now fixed directly upon him as he
debuts his first womenswear collection as lead designer. The pressure is on for Miyamae to meet the needs of the new era and generation,
while further developing the Issey Miyake brand.

With his first collection hitting the catwalk in 5 days and counting (
Sunday October 2nd at 3pm local time), Miyamae spares a moment from
his hectic pre-show schedule to tell Q+A about his excitement for spring/summer 2012. “Having been appointed as the new designer of the
Issey Miyake womenswear collections is a big responsibility,” says Miyamae. “I have learned a lot from Mr. Miyake and Dai Fujiwara. This
knowledge has become fundamental to my creations. I want to keep the Issey Miyake spirit and add my own interpretation with new ideas
and freshness.”
Where the Issey Miyake woman is heading is now in the fate of Miyamae. If his pre-spring/summer 2012 collection is any indication of what we can expect this coming Sunday – vivid colors
and architectural shapes –  then we are certainly in for a treat. Based on pre-spring, we are certainly impressed with Miyamae’s ability to make technology-driven designs so wearable and
posh, which is a true testament to his ability to create not only a look, but a statement for today’s new ‘it’ girls.
