Fatima Lopes Shows How In Fashion -
Some Opposites Do Attract
Like Many Shows This Season, Fatima Lopes' Fall 2011 Collection Played Heavily with British Mod, But With a Slight Japanese Twist
Black monochrome has been the season's staple for opening looks on the runway. The Portuguese designer Fatima Lopes took the polar route for her Fall 2011 collection, kicking things
off with blistering winter whites. The British Mod feel that's permeated the Fashion Week scene for the past month took center stage here as well, this time, with a Japanese tinge. The
second look out was a white, plush coat with extremely rounded shoulders, made especially saucy by the lack of a top underneath. The very same silhouette saw its black counterpart much
later on in the progression of the show, sans fur, more dress-like than outerwear, with a Japanese cummerbund for some tasteful cinching.
The run was essentially all black and white and that complementary-geared palette was met with complementary patterns throughout. The missing left shoulder on a dress was anchored
by a very high slit on the right. Where one shoulder on a jacket was littered in polka-dots, the other was solid black. The major play on counterbalancing was mainly steered here by
color-blocking and pattern-making, which went beyond just cutting a hem here and eliminating a sleeve there. Even the wide array of collars that line this collection were given an artsy
skewing - once again, where a classically black, seemingly normal lapel graces the left side of a blazer, the right lapel is structured in varying widths of parallel blocks of black and white.
Some particular looks came off as a tad-bit overwrought and the overall effect, by the end, started feeling a bit repetitive, but the Portuguese designer made a seriously good case for
evening-wear, where she finally introduced some strategically considered romantic lacework.
It didn't create the kind of splash that Lopes made back in 2000 when she walked the runway wearing the world's most expensive bikini (emblazoned in diamonds and gold, then valued at
approximately $1 Million), but it wasn't forgettable either. That third look, an opaque white tube dress with severely rounded cut-out sides that served as armholes, was one of our favorite
takes on British Mod that we've seen all season. That's one little number that will stick in our minds come Fall.
