Mara Hoffman introduces us to her unconventionally glamorous global traveller for Fall/Winter 2011

It was fitting that, being over 7 months pregnant, Mara Hoffman chose to play with the idea of the sacred earth mother for her Fall/Winter 2011 presentation.
Happily, there was no hemp or tie dye in sight, instead Hoffmann’s interpretation of this earth goddess, her ‘spiritual warrior muse’ focused on an edgier,
darker deity.

One who favours plenty of eye catching prints on long, body skimming gowns, striking accessories and nomadic chunky knits. Having just been selected
for the
W Hotels Fashion Next program, Hoffman wisely opted a more editorial aesthetic. Many of the models sported black turbans and printed veils to
match the print of the gowns which gave the collection a distinct direction. Moody black dresses were given added intrigue thanks to a confident use of
braiding and tassels. Hoffman has managed to balance the laid back poolside vibe which was has become her trademark (the latest instalment of her
ever popular swimwear collection will be shown in Miami in July) with an unconventional glamour. A standout piece, and Hoffman’s personal favourite,
was the black and white feather print dress with neat black tassels trimming the waist and hips.

Hoffman knows a thing or two about proportion. Many of the dresses had a retro floatiness in keeping with the mystical tribal theme, while others diced
with body con. The full length Traveller print dress was given edge thanks to its fitted cut and unusual hood and was crying out for a warehouse party. Floor
sweeping gowns aside, the collection also boasted pieces for those goddesses living in chillier climes. The New York-based designer debuted a great
new wool tweed multi-stripe fabric on a knee length coat in pink, white and grey, a graphic print shirt that would add jazz to any autumnal outfit and frayed
chunky knits that ensure you’re warm and cool simultaneously. The use of jersey and georgette gave the collection a relaxed vibe but it was nonetheless
strongly directed and energetically honed. Hoffman’s is a tribe we wouldn’t mind being part of.
