Valerian Hughes Captures The Look of
La Petite Parisienne for Fall 2011
When it comes to a classic, sophisticated look, Parisian women definitely have that certain je ne sais quoi. Honing in on this idea of Frenchness, designer Valerian Hughes aimed for
simple elegance this season. But, what resulted was modesty in design that lacked the maturity of someone who has trained and worked alongside the likes of
Dries Van Noten,
Paco Rabane
and Christian Lacroix.

Twenty looks graced the stage of the
Champs Elysees theatre where the Fall/Winter 2011 runway show was held. The mostly black collection needed a bit of theatricality to give the little
black dresses that dominated the line-up some extra appeal. We can’t deny Hughes’ ability to create clean lines that effortlessly defined each model’s body in flexible and sensual
materials such as silk, organza and cashmere. However, by playing it too safe in design construction, the Saint Barthelemy-born designer fell short of bringing a modern angle to the
classics that symbolize ‘Parisienne’ style. Parisienne is the essence of a woman who is not afraid to be bold and knows unique craftsmanship. One look in particular captured this Parisian
chic ideal and it was a belted tile print navy blue jacket, dark blue leather skirt, blue gloves, accented with blue scarf tied at the neck. The monochromatic contrast felt relaxed, yet looked
refined. We only wish Hughes had dived deeper to give us a true glance of what is defining femininity in Paris today.
